Happy Valentine's Day

Sand Art Bottles
All you need for a sand art project are some bottles and colored sand - check your local craft store for little bottles designed for holding the sand with a rubber stopper. Some of the bottles come in the shape of a heart. Fill with any mixture of colors you like in layers. If you can't find hearts, then fill other shapes with pink, red and white sand. Another way to create your own colored filler is to use food coloring and salt.
Heart Pocket Valentine Card Holder
Rather than using a shoebox to hold Valentine's Day cards, make a heart pocket. Cut out a large heart out of red craft paper. Lay the large heart on top of a pink piece of craft paper and trace the bottom V of the heart about 2/3 of the way up the heart. Now remove the large heart and draw a line connecting the two sides of the V to form a triangle. Staple the pink triangle on two sides to the large heart to form a pocket. This is now your heart pocket holder. Decorate it with glitter glue and markers.

Heart Mirror Craft
Pick up a wooden heart framed mirror and some red, pink and white tissue from your local craft store. Cut the tissue into one inch squares. Have the children glue the squares in a pattern onto the wooden frame to make a colorful keepsake mirror.
Sweet Treat Graphing
A really fun way to practice math skills on Valentine's Day is to dole out a treat, like Sweet Tarts, M & Ms, or jelly beans in different colors. Have the kids graph how many of each color they were given.
Valentine's Day Pottery
If you have a toddler, what a great way to remember the younger years than with a handprint or footprint. Take a trip out to your local ceramics studio and create a heart design on a plate out of two footprints or two handprints or a combination of the two. Don't forget to let the studio know that you want non-toxic colors. Older children can put hearts on mugs or plates or create their own unique Valentine's Day designs.
