Recycle Used Dryer Sheets into Flowers
Take four dryer sheets and layer them on top of one another. Fold them together accordian style like a fan. Take a pipe cleaner and wrap it around the middle of the accordian for the stem. Fan out the accordian into petals forming a sort of puffy flower like a carnation. Now for the fun part. Take a tray and place a few drops of paint with a lot of water to make colored water. Have your child gently dip the edges of the flower into the colored water to create a gently colored effect.
Map Frames
Take a magnetic fridge frame and trace it onto a piece of cardboard. Cut out the cardboard frame and cut an old map to fit the frame with a 1/2 inch overlap. Now draw an x in the middle of the map and cut along the x so that the map can easily be folded over the cardboard neatly. Have you child glue the map to the frame. After the initial attachment, instruct your child to fold the edges of the map over the frame and glue them down as well. Your map frame is ready. At this point you can add embellishments or a magnet on the back.

Appreciation for What We Have
How do you teach a child to appreciate what they have when they have too much? It is easy to say that there are people starving in the world, but to actually comprehend that in a child's eyes is difficult. Sometimes it is easier to visualize concepts through stories. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl, is one such story that is wonderful to read to your kids. It is available at most libraries and makes a great book club choice as well.
Lesson From Girl Scouts
This was a really great activity that we did at Girl Scouts to teach the girls how words can hurt. We handed out a nice picture to color and let the girls color it so nicely. Then we discussed which words are hurtful - eg. fat. lazy, dumb etc. and what nice words we could use. Then we asked the girls to crumple up their coloring page. It was very hard for them to bring themselves to crumple up something that they had worked so hard to do. They then had to open up their coloring page and smooth it out. Finally we showed them that the wrinkles could not be removed, just like hurtful words could not be taken back. Each hurtful word makes a mark on a person that is hard to remove just like the wrinkles. It was a very nice lesson for the girls.
Boredom Buster - Fun with Paper Airplanes
Paper airplanes can lead to lots of fun. Just building them is fun, but that's just the beginning. Each child can build an airplane and older siblings can assist the younger ones. Then set up a contest with the following flights. Each time the children get a chance to modify their design per the category.
-
Craziest flying pattern.
-
Most twirly.
-
Straightest flyer.
-
Highest flyer.
-
Lowest flyer.
- Smoothest flyer.
